Nestled within an urban conservation area, Frame House designed by Ayça Vural-Cutts from Studio AVC offers a harmonious contrast to its period property neighbours, enhancing the character of the area while maintaining its modern identity. Designed with a keen understanding of its historical context, this modern house respects the Victorian buildings on either side, adding a contemporary twist to the traditional streetscape.
Ayça used simple crisp lines, natural materials, and functional elements to ensure the house blends into its surroundings, while bringing a fresh, contemporary presence to the street. Key design features, such as angled brick soffits and the setback of the glazing from the main façade, are inspired by the decorative eaves brackets common in the area, further rooting the design in the street’s vernacular. The front elevation’s dog-tooth brickwork reflects the intricate Victorian brick patterns found on neighbouring buildings, while the angled geometry of the front façade echoes the canted bay windows that define many homes in the street.
At the heart of the home is an open-plan kitchen and dining area, a dynamic space where family life revolves around meals, gatherings, and connection with nature. Large sliding doors open to a terraced garden, blurring the boundaries between the house and its outdoor environment. Upstairs, French doors with Juliette balconies grace the bedrooms, framing picturesque views of the landscape beyond.
SCP Contracts worked closely with Ayça, the head of the architectural team and designer at Studio AVC, to specify furniture for the space.
