London, UK

Situated on Featherstone Street in East London, The Derwent London in-house design team took on the task of crafting the second DL Lounge, a sprawling 1265 sqm amenity space at the centre of Derwent London’s Old Street campus. Working alongside architects MSMR, the team looked to build upon the success of DL/78 in Fitzrovia, with this new design tailored to meet the diverse needs of Derwent’s member community.

The focal point on the ground floor is an inviting lounge bathed in natural light, complemented by a dedicated café bar and an outdoor terrace. The lounge is crafted to facilitate collaborative work and social interactions. Descending to the lower ground level, a library and call rooms provide a tranquil space for productivity.

A pivotal aspect of the DL/28 design was the creation of a versatile array of private hire rooms, independent of the members’ spaces. These rooms are easily adaptable or combinable, accommodating various events, from intimate meetings to 50-100 seat presentations or even a grand 200-person drinks reception. The lower-ground level hosts meeting rooms organised around a generously sized central break-out space.

Health and well-being are foundational elements in the DL/28 design. Drawing inspiration from mid-century architecture, the design approach was to organise spaces with solid walls and translucent screens, playfully framing and delaying views to instil a sense of fluidity and anticipation. The manipulation of natural light is a focal point, with strategically placed surfaces capturing subtle plays of moving shadows or reflections bouncing off rippling water.

An enduring base palette, featuring crown-cut European oak, green terrazzo, patinated bronze, and neutral textiles, establishes a sense of richness and warmth. This foundation is punctuated by coffered ceilings and bold curved forms, serving as visual markers that culminate in a dramatic conclusion to the architectural journey.
