Kirk Balk Community College

Kirk Balk Community College is a bold new building situated on the outskirts of Barnsley. AHMM embraced the ambition of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to provide new learning opportunities for the whole community. They have created an educational environment that is both welcoming and inspiring.
The main triangular part of the school is cleverly split into different learning zones that all have their own dedicated social and external areas. These zones start at “street level” and form part of a dramatic tiered sequence of the learning and social spaces within the atrium, linked by a impressive staircase that rises from the atrium base to the top floor of the building.
AHMM worked with Studio Myerscough to create a colour palette and graphic wayfaring scheme across the whole school. Inspired by fractal geometry the design scheme creates a contemporary and dynamic feel to the school. SCP Contracts worked with AHMM to supply appropriate furniture and lighting around the school, in communal areas and in the library.
